It appears the only way to get around this issue is to pray for pioneer or, more likely, Apple to release a fix.  Clearly the problem was introduced at the 3.1.1 firmware release.

I’m taking a more offensive approach by trying to find someone that has 32GB 3GS with 3.0.1 installed that wants to trade or sell.  Wish me luck (or contact me if you have one!)
